Group Therapy

Although we all need to connect to others, relationships can be difficult to maneuver. Group therapy allows you to practice communication skills that cause you problems; it offers you the opportunity to give and get feedback in a safe environment. In a group, you learn that there are no right or wrong answers; there are only individual perspectives, attitudes, and feelings. As a group participant you will be asked to support as well as challenge others so that everyone can grow from the experience. In group therapy, you can learn to “agree to disagree”, and come to accept that “not winning” does not diminish your personal value. Group work gives you permission to disagree with someone and realize you can move past the feelings. And you also learn that someone can be angry with you and you won’t fall apart from the experience.

My goal for each group participant is growth and self-understanding. The group experience will help you to better understand the roots of your feelings as well as how to better manage your emotions. Other goals include helping yourself by helping another, and experiencing less self-judgment as you learn to accept the idiosyncrasies of others. And finally, participation in a group helps you to feel less isolated, as you come to know that others are also struggling with their own serious issues.
